Two things here- First, traditional defensive seed treatment is almost always a 50/50 proposition, but the 50% of the time it pays, it pays BIG. One way to help with the cost of treating seed is to get your own treater. We treat our seed with a 3 fungicide 1 insecticide treatment that has higher rates of the actives than what we used to use and it only costs us $5.50/unit. The treater costs us $10k/yr for 5 yrs and we only spend about a day and a half total treating 2,500 units of soybeans. Considering we used to pay $17/unit, it's already paid for itself.

Second- The company we work with puts humic, and fulvic acid, zinc, molybdenum, a carbon source, and a pgp in the treatment with the defense and we've seen ~4 bu/acre on average over the past 3 years. That pays for the treatment, the treater, and the time to run it 5x over. Best investment we've ever made.
