Eastern Washington State | 4lbs / acre of seed costs $40-60 in my area. I agree with others that you should go by seeds per acre and not pounds per acre. I shoot for 350k seeds per acre with a drill. Planters can do less. This is for spring canola, winter canola seed rates are much less.
For me, compared to wheat canola yields around 35 lbs per acre for every bushel of wheat I'd expect. For fertility I plan on 6 lbs of N total uptake per 100 lbs of expected crop. Deduct how much N is in your soil test from your expected total uptake and that's how much to apply. I apply sulfur at a 1:5 ratio to the nitrogen, but no less than 20 lbs/acre of S. 1/2 lb of boron per acre, but no more than 1/4 lb at once.
In my area the cost to grow canola is pretty equal to the cost to grow wheat, the seed is a little more expensive and its more expensive to harvest, but the herbicides are cheaper. I mostly grow winter canola though. | |
