It's not food that restricts China, its energy. Other than soybeans China is borderline self sufficient in everything else. Oil is their achilles heel, not food.

The US steel production hasn't changed all that much in the last 50 years. We just dont consume the amount of steel we used to so imports haven't changed that much either. The US has never had ag production issue and has always had the opposite problem of burdensome supplies.

As to WW2, the US basically being on a non invadable island had as much to do with it as anything. Not having to defend or have ones means of production open to destruction makes a huge difference when it comes to productivity. Yes the US had resources or had easy to access to resources in the Western Hemisphere, but not having to hide or rebuild means of production makes it easier to produce.
