Seymour, IL | would be a resource I would suggest. There is a chapter dedicated to soil fertility, testing, etc.
I tried using variable rate spreading for over 20 years, with the goal of evening up some farms. did not accomplish that goal, so returned to flat spreading. We spread every acre each year based on yield/removal.
Everyone is trying to be economical, but I do not think skipping fertilizer applications is a path forward that is sustainable.
And if the farms are rented, not likely allowed under standard lease terms. Most cash leases call for at least application of removal rates. Crop share are typically the same, but rates may be changed if all parties agree.
