Subject: RE: Reverse anatomical shoulder replacement

NW Iowa
I had both knees replaced two months apart in early 2019 and a total reverse on my right shoulder in December of 2021. I was told to use the knees like they were original equipment. I am still farming and have used them pretty hard some days. They will complain a little when used hard but never bad enough to wake me up at night. Most days I am pain free. I was told not to do certain motions with the shoulder, particularly not to lift objects over the side of a pickup. I'm pretty religious about the pickup advice but otherwise do pretty much everything I was doing before surgery but without the pain. I am able to lift my right arm almost completely vertical which I was unable to do before surgery. I run the combine during harvest, frequently running 10+ hour days for almost two weeks. My right shoulder can be pretty sore for the first few days from pushing on the hydro lever. My strongest advice is to religiously do the exercises they prescribe. And push yourself to your pain limit or more during rehab, particularly with the knees. I had full range of motion with my knees in less than three weeks of rehab each. The total reverse shoulder operation requires a tendon to be severed and reattached. I was told not to lift anything heavier than a cup of coffee for three months after that surgery. I followed that religiously for two months. After that, when I was laying in bed, I would lift my right arm with my left arm above my head to my pain limit (or more) and then back down to my side. It wasn't on the prescribed list of exercises, but I only needed about a week of rehab when I was cleared to start it after the three months.
