Tablerock Ranch eastern Wa | We use AI, did last week on heifers as we are fall calvers. Still using a Bull we bought and talked about on here over ten years ago... a bla bla bla 307r son something or other. Bull took a bullet to the forehead as he got unworkable "man killer mean" after feet injuries and repeated doctoring, story goes I got home from long winter vacation, son describes his frustration with the Bull and persistent feet issues, I start climbing in the pen to get him up and watch him walk, son informs me the bull lives for the chance to play possum and hobble around to get a shot at killing someone then he is fast as lightening to kill a cowboy. Climbed back out and asked if he had a rifle in his pickup. First question one might ask is why are you still using that bull AI? if he had a foot problem and temperament issues... that bull has made me more money in the feedlot than any other bull I have used, he also turned out to be the best heifer bull we have ever used, we watched his cow progeny closely for a few years and no feet issues and temperament was fine.... but I digress... If I go outside for any semen today it is never on the flavor of the day, the bull has to be in circulation for three or four years so I can talk to other guys that have had calves and cows out of him... let someone else take the three year hit on a swing and a miss bull that started out as the best bull ever only to fizzle out and cause wasted seasons. Hope this helps, one last thing my philosophy on building a cow herd is through good cows, then I try to put the finishing touches on with good bulls.... it starts with a good cow. |
