| You get genetic diversity and a bull that isn’t freeloading 10months of the year. Anything beyond that is negligible. It’s a tool to fix weak points in your cow herd. If you have poor milk or too much, long or short cows, wide or narrow cows, there’s a sire you can get straws from to help correct the flaws you see. The diversity part is not being locked into a $12-20k bull for 5 years, ie won’t have inbreeding. If you don’t like it or need it, simply don’t use it.
Personally, I haven’t ai’d anything since 2015. Had 160 heifer calves to breed and buying straws was way cheaper then buying heifer bulls. Looking to reload again on heifers in 2026 and will probably ai them vs purchasing bulls for one time use on heifers.
