Subject: RE: Least amount of cover on 4,6 in tile

gpsdude - 11/17/2025 12:57 My general rule when designing is to try to get 24" of cover. Less than 18" I start asking questions as far as tillage practices and traffic patterns. Less than 12" Is a no go for me. This can also be affected by traffic. Are there loaded semis driving over the line? Is the loaded grain cart going across it every trip back to the loadout area?

We've been plowing into an existing terrace main that I think is circa-1990-somethingish, but of course nobody had the maps and everybody who did it is dead....    It probes at about 18" further down the hill and seems to be just fine, but I stopped putting laterals into it when the start holes got to be about 25".    My SWAG judgement is, if we go further downslope at some time in the future landowner can clear some trees and start a new main rather than everybody be disappointed and have to fix things that were halfazzed.
