East Central Ohio | Looking to get some opinions on possibly moving to a TMR for backgrounding calves, and maybe get some questions answered.
First, do you think it is worth it for feeding 75-140 at a time? Currently I feed triticale baleage in rings on pasture and I hate how much gets wasted. In addition I hand feed a corn/pellet mix in bunks every day, and while I do like that I get to walk right in amongst them, it’s also a real hassle transporting buckets and getting mowed over trying to feed. In addition, if I could use some distillers in the ration I could cheapen my protein source significantly.
Secondly, is it worth finding an older vertical wagon for cheap just to try the process? I’ve had someone tell me to avoid used mixers because they just end up being a pile of scrap that doesn’t process the bales or mix. I don’t have a fence line bunk so I would be limited to feeding with the tmr when the ground is froze or dry, but I would just like to see how things would work before I pursue pouring concrete and building an alley.
Thanks for any information. | |
