Northeast, Nebraska | Got woke up at 1 am by my mom who had gotten up to go to the bathroom and happened to look outside and saw flames coming out of a roof. She was right. It was our holding bin and the inside light on the roof inside for running the powersweep in the dark comes on when the outside light is on. Well somebody filled the bin all the way to the light and we didn't know and the light was left on. When I got there the fire department didn't know what to do. It was the first time they had to fight a fire that started from the top of the bin. They Doused it with water. We unloaded half of the bin, about 7000 bu, onto the ground. They pulled out about 5 bu of burnt corn before we started to unload. Hauled it all to the ethanol plant 2 days later and only got docked for 18% moisture corn. That was pretty much how wet it was when we put it in there. Had to replace some wiring and the bin roof so I consider ourselves pretty lucky. | |
