| Ah you just hit on the 64 dollar question. What is a AUM? https://wyoextension.org/publications/html/B1320/ i have this discussion a lot with producers, some just don't get it. A AUM was set based on a 1,000 lb. cow. However I've seen genetics take cows to 1,600 lbs. Turn those out on your range with a big calf and see where you're headed over time. First thing is your going to pastures not holding expectations, then cows long term trend is downward conception rates.
So I run 6 months in one state on winter range, and 6 months in another. Feed requirements are different in that 6 month time frame. In summer I'm raising a calf, in winter I'm maintaining a cow getting ready to calve. So that's why my forage requirements in winter range goes further because my calves aren't born and grazing. Yet leases are based on forage requirements of a 1,000 lb. cow and calf.
My opinion a AUM should be figured on 1,250 lb. cow on western ranges. Just trend data and days recorded on grazing in my opinion support my thoughts in my area. It's fine line you walk to try and manage to a calendar and precipitation. You need the ability to tweak grazing days vs.the constraints you deal with. Government only looks at a calendar, says nope you cant move cattle to new grass, if you do you cut grazing days. Its not about plant health its about holding to paperwork.
Doug I'm going to send you email today. Check when you get time.
