"Poor in spirit" according to Tony Evans in his Bible commentary book means " ...to be in spiritual poverty, to be conscious of one's dependence on God. Kingdom people recognize their own inadequacy and insufficiency apart from him. As long as you think you are rich in spirit, you'll actually be independent and proud. So become a spiritual beggar.
"God's kingdom refers to God's rule. If you are poor in spirit, you will get to see God's heavenly rule in your earthly life. Only by being desperately dependent on God can you become dependent on God can you become what he created you to be."
