Subject: Growing corn in the desert

N.E. MT
Thinking about maybe planting a bunch of dryland corn next year. Sandy/sandy loam soil our annual precipitation is 12.5-13 but it’s been 9 Years since we’ve broke 10” would be going into lentil stubble. How low can I go on population? 8k, 10k, 12k? Yeild goal I would say probably 60-80bu. Have a 12r30 inch planter for irrigated ground but will likely need a bigger planter if I see this through. 15” 20” 22” 30”? Have choppers but will need combine heads no matter. Can I find the combine heads I need to match the ideal row spacing. 3 cr9090 new Holland machines. I’m leaning towards 20” spacing and 20” plant spacing. I know that’s thin but in previous trials yeild increased as population decreased. Any recommendations on varieties? Very good flex ear, drought tolerance and virgin corn ground I wouldn’t think I would need any traits outside of RR.
