SW Iowa | So after a few years of pushing the limits of our small lot, we have a rarely inexpensive option to expand our weening/feedlot for our <100 head operation. We have this long run of cement from previous buildings that is smooth and will make a good feeding pad. In the one photo, I just set the extra bunks we had on hand along it to get a better idea of what to shoot for. So, as for the crude diagram, all of the orange-highlighted fence is more or less permanent and will have to stay. I'm not too worried about the row crop border, but it is shown for reference. The lot labeled Feed Lot is where the new pen will be made, with the bunks being on the concrete pad. Gate opening and water are shown. Should the gate between the Calving lot and Feed Lot be placed it in the center or should it be put towards one end? Do the bunks need to be placed on the cement, as there is room or will they be fine on the dirt and allow a more shallow placement along the concrete? Do I need an alley with gates along the bunks for possible escapees? I see some neighbors do, and those who don't. Our current bunks are set with rigid pipe and posts, and these will have to be set with brackets and cable. Anything else I am missing or should alter? I understand this is highly subjective, and it is hard to know what will work for someone else's operation.
