Subject: RE: Cover crop vs disking bean stubble

SC Minnesota
Strip-till is not the same as chiseling or ripping. It is only disturbing 1/3 of the soil surface leaving the other 2/3 undisturbed. I have been strip-tilling for 15-20 years on my farm and have seen water infiltration rates increase, erosion decrease substantially, and yields have done nothing but go up. I am in the prairie pothole region with deep dark clay loam soils that many say needs to be tilled to fill in the blank: warm up sooner, dry out sooner, or make a decent crop. Many want to use full width tillage to cover up issues that could decrease yields. In my area, the management decisions to get great yields is tile, manure, and than the other things fall into place no matter the tillage or no tillage system used. Once the tile is in place, the reasons for full width tillage are no longer the issue. Strip-till and cover crops have lead to great soil structure and water infiltration and yields that are 25-30% above the county average. As always this doesn't apply to everyones ones situation.
