My understanding is you still need a "normal" perimeter fence. I assume this is a fence that your farm insurance company would consider legal. I see a few single wire hot wire fences near busy roads and wonder @ the possible issue should critters get out.
Once a cow is 'trained' to the collar and the system I can see using this technology with a single hot wire on crop fields with no fence.
Some of the issues I have with electric fence could be mitigated with a collar. If a tree falls on the electric fence or deer take it out the cattle should still be where they are supposed to be.
Also I think these systems have an 'alarm' if an animal is outside of where it is supposed to be.
One thought comes to mind that I heard/read a long time ago. You don't want to be the first one or the last one to adopt new technology!
I do not like the idea of paying a yearly subscription or maintenance fee. The entry costs to collars currently seems steep. I think this technology will only get better, especially if satellite cell service is more readily available. As more players get involved the cost should come down.
As time is my most limiting factor, I can see me using this technology in the near future. The options and doors it opens up is exciting. |
