Subject: My experience with row guidance

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I use an Ag Leader InCommand 1200 for yield monitoring in my combine.

Three years ago, I installed Ag Leader's Steady Steer assisted steering system (turns the steering wheel for me) on my Deere combine. This uses an Ag Leader's InCommand 1200 and SCM (steering controller module) to turn the steering wheel based on GPS and AB lines. The AB lines could be from the planting operation or new AB lines. I use a higher level of GPS correction (Terra Star Pro C) which works well in our rowed soybeans. We plant 24-30" rows and harvest 14. This means that the majority of the time I am harvesting from two different planter passes. Since my bean head is a true 35', I have some grace to work with where the guess rows might be a bit wide due to hills. I harvest "with the rows" but it would work fine cutting at an angle.

However, I didn't feel that the system worked as well as I desired in corn. I have an 8 row corn head so I'm always taking the left, center or right set of planted rows but the steering was not as exact as I hoped for. This is due to the inevitable planter drift. Steady Steer was steering my combine properly on the AB lines but due to planter drift this was not always perfectly centered on the rows. So two years ago, I purchased a feeler system for corn from the Headsight company. The model was the Truesight II.

It has its own SCM and is able to control the Steady Steer motor in corn based on a set of feelers on the corn head.. The feeler assembly senses the gap between rows 3 & 4. It also has various connections for head height, seat presence switch, ground speed, steering axle position etc. Setup is handled via the UT screen available on my Ag Leader display.

This means that during soybean harvest, the Steady Steer motor is connected to the Steady Steer Controller and steers my combine based on AB lines. Come corn harvest, I disconnect the Steady Steer motor from the Steady Steer controller and connect it to the Truesight II controller. I also move the engage push button switch connection from one to the other. Then the Steady Steer motor steers my combine based on the feelers on the corn head.

Both systems work very well. The Truesight II system can work with a variety of combines and other steering systems such as integrated hydraulic systems. When I made my purchase the price was $6000.

Since then I understand the company has been purchased by Precision and then Agco.
