I have a field that was mostly peat and never applied N to the corn crop. It was corn on corn and I got 180-220 bu/acre corn (on the years it didn't drown out). It is in crp now because it drowned out almost half the time over a twenty year span. But it shows the power of the soil providing N for the crop.
