I was SCUBA diving Superior. 1980 maybe? Rain, lightning so dives cancelled. I went to mom/pop grocery store. Guy in rain gear was picking stuff, weighing it, setting back getting smaller…. I asked. He was ships cook, walked from iron ore loading area.
So he was going to walk back with what he could carry. I offered to drive him at least to gate. “If you can get me in you can take loads”. He filled two boxes. The gate guard thought I was delivery driver. Right up to dock. I offered to help carry. Walking under ore hoppers, up gangplank to ship. To gally, then quick tour of engines. 3 HUGE Catapiller generators. The shafts iirc electric powered. Ship originally coal powered. Saw where conveyer brought it in. Then a few in crew seemed unhappy the cook brought someone aboard. Nothing said, just feeling. “Who is this guy”. I think he realized he broke protocol? So I left. It was the sister ship to the EFG.

I looked it up. I might have been the Homer. If so the ship was soon taken out of service, scrapped. But I am 95% sure it was 1984 I did that tour?
