Subject: RE: Over application of NH3

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
The confusion with the meter cal depends on two factors 1) the units you have in mind when you enter the target rate and 2) the controller and how it uses the meter cal.

This is quite easy with liquid sprays or fertilizer since most of the time we think in terms of gallons of product or mixture per acre.

With NH3, many (most) of us think in terms of "Pounds of actual N per acre). In other words if you say you want 180 pounds, you probably mean 180 pounds of actual "N" per acre.

A flow meter measures product in terms of volume and not weight or mass. This means a conversion number needs to be applied somewhere in the process if we wish to enter the target rate in terms of Pounds of actual N per acre.

With a Raven use the suggested NH3 cal number on the tag and enter the target rate that you desire in Pounds of actual N per acre.

If you are using an Ag Leader, the Ag Leader knows that you are working with NH3 or N when you choose the product. Therefore the Ag Leader applies the conversion internally.

That means with the old sensor you would use 171 with a Raven or 72 with an Ag Leader.
With the new sensor you would use 348 with a Raven or 147 with an Ag Leader (Essentially double the values).

In all cases, enter the target rate in terms of Pounds of Actual N per acre that you desire.

With an Ag Leader, the onscreen map will be in terms of Pounds of NH3 (not actual N) per acre.
