You are correct in the sense that display smoothing tends to cover up the applied rate. If the applied rate is within acceptable tolerance of the target rate, the target rate is shown. If the applied rate is outside of an acceptable tolerance of the target rate then the actual rate is shown.

Display smoothing can be shut off, if you wish. The early Raven's did not have display smoothing. It was added because Dads were complaining that the displayed rate was jumping around and not stable like it was with a sprayer.

Given all the variables of applying NH3 compared to spraying, this "jumping around" a bit is understandable.

For those who have run their tanks dry for 20 years without any damage - I'm extremely surprised.
