 Thumb of Michigan | I don't remember what study I got this info from, but alfalfa goes dormant after either a night with 6 hours below 32 degrees or temp goes to 24 or below degrees. You don't want alfalfa to start re-growing and depleting its root reserves after cutting, which helps promote better winter survival.
If you leave a higher stubble or strips to hold snow, this also helps with winter survival, too. Seems alfalfa doesn't like temps around zero or below, snow blanket helps. | |
