Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | Trimble has GPS systems that use both approaches.
Some systems use an enclosure on top of the cab that is just an antenna such as the one shown. This requires that the "GPS engine" is located elsewhere. Sometimes this is a separate enclosure just for GPS (Trimble 332 and others) or as part of a more complex device (Trimble CFX-750 and others).
Trimble also makes GPS systems where the antenna and the "GPS engine" are both located in the enclosure on top of the cab. They are generally the larger flat style. This results in less cab clutter. These are sometimes referred to as "Smart Antennas".
If the cable connector is a CoAx style such as shown here, then it does not contain the GPS engine which must be somewhere (antenna only). If the cable connector is a plug consisting of several wires (Power, ground, Rx, Tx, signal ground) then the GPS engine is part of the external enclosure (Smart antenna).
The antenna shown above might replace the antenna in my Trimble CFX-750. It would not replace the Ag Leader GPS 6000 and GPS 7500 that I use in other tractors, sprayer and combine.
