You can do it yourself but you won't be able to use it for any legal purposes. Have to have a surveyor license to write up a deed survey and record it with the county.

Most counties around here allow you to look at deeds online. Look up your deed and the deeds for all surrounding parcels. The deeds will tell you the location of pins and monuments that you can use to measure from.

Once you have located some nearby pins, you can start measuring to find the corners as described in the deed. Sometimes the pins are in the roadway (iron railroad spike). Sometimes they are even marked with metal cover with the letter M on it. More recent surveys put the pin at the edge of the road right of way.
