| To Desk Jockey and anyone else thinking of getting into YouTube: If you happen to have the right personality, i.e. you come across as friendly, honest, and well-spoken, you can be successful beyond your wildest dreams. But there is a cost. Zach is a perfect example. He has over a million subscribers- a million people who have gotten to know him and his family and now think of him like a personal friend. A million people he doesn't know from Adam, and among those are folks who: 1. Would think nothing of 'We were in the area; just thought we'd drop in for a visit'. 2. See his videos and treat them as a shopping channel, if you know what I mean.
And that is scary- not only for his family, but also for his insurance agent. Sooner or later you will have to set boundaries and take steps to protect yourself and your family. I've never done it (YouTube). I have a face for radio, a voice for the funny papers, and the charisma of an all-night dentist- but those are my observations.
As to Zach, I don't understand the negativity, but people like what they like. He talks like he went to school and actually paid attention, which is huge for me. I think Zach is pretty open, honest, and humble about acknowledging the opportunities YouTube has opened up for him.
