West TN | If weed control is your main goal, rye drilled at least 30 lbs/acre is your answer. I’d stay away from wheat as wheat does not have the allelopathic properties that rye does. However in front of beans, I’d like to see more than a monocrop. I’d also put in some oats and annual ryegrass. Our mix is 30 lbs rye, 15 lbs oats, 7 lbs annual ryegrass. If you can let that mix grow and accumulate biomass before you plant, it will greatly benefit weed control. Utilizing a roller crimper will increase weed control greatly too as minimizing sunlight reaching the ground keeps pigweed from germinating.
You want to stay away from aerial seeding to get optimum weed control as you need a consistent, even stand to achieve weed control. It’s not that hard to clean out a drill, you’ll save money on seed cost as drilling doesn’t require as much seed per acre for same results, and you’ll see better results. | |
