Chebanse, IL..... | I heard news reports of 258,000 gallons of fuel also. That would be absurd.
Jet A fuel = 6.7 lbs per gallon. That would be 1,700,000 lbs of fuel. I'm not sure if anything could lift that much into the air.
MD11 typically holds about 38,000 gallons @ 6.7 lbs/gal = 254,000 lbs of fuel. That's still a lot.
Also, there's a good photo on Fox news website of one of the engines (not sure which) without any of it's nacelles, laying near the runway, totally unattached from the plane. Though a video taken by an airport ground employee shows flames on the LH wing during takeoff roll at about rotation time.
The MD11 is a descendant of the DC-10. I'm sure everyone remembers what happened at ORD airport, Chicago, in 1979. The left wing engine bolts came out (my explanation) & the engine thrusted itself forward and upwards over the wing, ripping out all hydraulics in the process. Pilots lost all control (boosted) and a fireball was the only thing left. I was flying about 70 mis. south of ORD at the time and the smoke was easily visible. It was a perfectly clear day. |
