Western, New York | I would stick with bridgeport, they are quality machines and parts are still available. J heads are nice as they are power feed. I have an older bridgeport with an M head (no power feed and shorter quill stroke) and it works just fine. Check the basics; spindle runout, play in the X & Y axis screws (table), Check the ways for major wear, as well as overall condition & Operation. digital readout (DRO) is nice but if its just a shop machine not necessary. They make power feed attachments for the X&Y that are cheap and bolt right on. As stated buying a machine that comes with tooling, collets, etc will save alot of money..marketplace, auctions etc are good places to look. Most will be 3 phase but you can run them off a simple phase converter. | |
