Subject: RE: 100 year old house foundation

Central Illinois
DevinF, Our house built in 1870 and remodeled by my Great Grandfather in 1954. In 1998 we replaced our basement. The contractor dug down on opposite corners while holding in place and poured footings. They then used blocks to build the walls. They continued to work there way around the house. The south end was left open for the skid loader to dig the basement lower and crawl space out. They went down low enough to lay 12 courses of blocks giving us 8' walls. After it was dug out they finished the south wall. I had in floor heat installed to add to the boiler system. The floor was poured and the contractor was finished. I back filled after placing footing tile and getting the sewer pipe connected to the septic tank. I also installed the windows and completed most of the interior work. Email is good if you have other questions. I was 32 years old then. I would not recommend this type of work to someone at my age today. Good luck with your decision.
