Subject: RE: 100 year old house foundation

NW Ohio,near Findlay
I have been around three or four houses that the homeowner wanted to do this. Where I worked we were only going to be removing the dirt from under home once is was going to be jacked up and held with steel beams. We were going to use skid steers and mini excavator on the outside, skid steer to bring dirt to mini to be loading truck on a ramp.
Sorry to say but two of them, once they had the one side held up with a beam, and digging around exposing the wood beams, logs in this case were so far gone, they stopped the project.
The other one I know of was a real mess, I will call it. I was not involved with this project, big house moving contractor was hired. They installed the steel beams, had it jacked up, nice job, looked good. The outside grade was on a slope, and a walk out basement was planned. They removed the dirt, skid steer out the back, formed up footers and poured the footers. The footers fit the old house, but the house was way out of square, walls would have to formed to fit house, basement contractor was not, will say happy. But the real killer was the framework on the interior wall was gone, think they call it powder post worms. We see that in old barns around here on interior beams, little holes. Didn't see it done, but they slid the old house, beams and all off the basement, crusted it up, hauled it away and burnt it.
Removed most of the footers that were poured, new footers for new house, nice square walls, now a beautiful home.
My suggestion, get a inspection on the framework of your house. The houses I was around, they assumed the bottom plate, was going to OK. BEFORE you do it, remove some of the plaster, drywall at the bottom. What killed this one house was they used the old blowed in insulation, looked like little silver pellets, can't think what it is called, (vermiculitle) Spelling ? It held in the moisture because it was a poor insulation, for years and years, and on the outside, was covered up with vinyl siding, inside never showed the moisture. It totally rotted out the wall studs and log on top of flagstone foundation. Good luck, get a couple of contractors to look at it.
