Jon seems to think the gov't should be doing things to help his (our) business and shame on them for not doing it. Personally this has never ended well. Distort the market once, then the gov't is on the hook for the rest of time because we apparently get used to it. What we should want is a stable country to sell our products into. That wasn't what the last administration was aiming for. Things like foreign trade are a nice deal but never something to put all your hope in. Other countries have their own issues and it's possible they wake up every morning without considering what the American farming needs.

As far as beef goes.... I get it that a popular food is now quite expensive and there is pressure for some sort of political answer. The fundamental is not so many folks want to raise beef. It's a long cycle with lots of chances for something to go wrong and a lot of work. Will high prices encourage more production? Yep and especially now that the cow fart people are getting let go (they've been around 40 yrs). Will over production occur? It's hard to say since it's still not something many folks want to do. I raise hogs, but they are in nice buildings so day to day work is reasonable (it's still work, stinks and pigs want to eat me). At some point hogs will have the same issue since not that many people want to do it (cheap labor = high death loss btw).
