Iowa | Dave can likely answer far better than I can, but I'll give you a novice answer since I am here anyway:
A macro is some programming external to excel that can be inserted to do functions that are not otherwise available in excel. One that I use is often called "printnumber". For example, it prints "One dollar and fifty-seven cents" instead of "$1.57". I use that macro to get excel to print checks, so the check can be printed in the same process as making the ledger entry and eliminates human error (which otherwise happens with me more often than the computer) when transposing numbers. You need to be careful where you get macros if you do not make your own. I imagine there could be some unwanted software inserted if it is from an untrustworthy source. Again, others like Dave can probably give a better answer than I can.
