We added our porch during the winter of 08. Our house is a square box type house that was built in 1914. We have been told that it had a porch at one time and was removed years ago. We bought the house in May of 2007 and I wanted to do this then. My father-in-law and I did the work. Our original plans had an 8 ft deck but a couple days before beginning I decided to push it out to 10 feet. I am glad I did. This allows a table and chairs on both sides with room to walk on both sides. I almost went to 12 feet but the cost of materials was really getting high at that size. The deck is the composite Trex board which is great. It's not completely finished yet. I work on it when I have time. The soffet lights were the latest addition. I have fan boxes and outlets on and my next item is running the wire to them. Now I just wish it was out in the country.
