SW OH
When we had our jerseys ours was homemade. It was a gate made from 1/2" galvanized pipe a foot narrower than the holding pen. It hung from an 8 foot square frame that rolled in door tracks. A fence charger hung on the wall in the prep room was wired to the gate. A rope and pulley system led to the walk in the back door of the parlor. The gate could be moved either way depending on if you pulled the rope up or down. The gate was hanging on big hooks and was easily lifted off 1 and swung sideways to get the cows in front of it. We tried just a pipe with weighted wires hanging down but had many frequent escapes.

A neighboring farm had a homemade one as well. I never saw it but heard some stories. It was very big and heavy. Sitting on car tires and powered by a 5HP motor. The stories were about injured cows that had to be put down. This farm got their help from the unemployment office on a regular basis. Their crowd gate was escape proof, but not idiot proof.
