I’ve thought for a while now that a semi-confined approach to cow/calf could be the future of the beef industry in the Midwest. I know it goes against popular opinion on stocktalk, but I think there’s more of it happening than we see. Lots of “free” stalks to run on after harvest in Iowa. 60” corn with covers in between to graze looks promising as well. Just a couple musings at the breakfast table this morning. No question, if I had cows today, I’d be doing the skip row deal with covers in the skips. I’d even use a 36” planter, have a new great plains 60” 3 pt drill to seed the covers, albeit a slow process. I’d get a couple rigs going if needed bigger acreage. Pull it with a 25 hp Bobcat tractor. |
