Faunsdale, AL | With that much regrowth, you must not have been in drought conditions. That’s when it concentrates nitrogen in the stalk. Cattle will eat the tops and leaves more than the base of the stalks where the concentration is highest, so a whole plant analysis doesn’t tell you what you really need to know when grazing. Great for silage or haying a crop though ensiling will reduce levels by half during fermentation.
As mentioned, you can test for nitrate. Prussic acid is a given if it gets frosted, no need to test, just wait till the damaged parts are dry. The cyanide compounds are volatile and will go off as the dead leaves dry on the live plant or in curing hay. This can be a challenge when you have cattle on the field and you get a frost! Best to graze early or delay til after frost has killed it and it’s dry. | |
