Historically reproductive traits are twice as important as growth traits (economically) and growth traits twice as important as carcass traits. That can change if you are say retaining ownership and selling them on the grid. It cost you money only if it costs as much to wean heavier calves than say smaller cows weaning lighter calves and doing it with the same costs. Which generally brings more net dollars 100 five weights or 80 six weights? At a recent sale nearby the calves grossed about the same whether they weighed 500 or 700, so how is giving away 200 pounds profitable? | |
