This was Wednesday after 1 pm, I was moving to the next farm to combine and my brother and I needed a ride back so I called my son ( mid 30's age)who works mostly from home unless he's traveling the state to visit customers of his,, I was in the combine and brother was in the cart tractor,,
On the way to come pick us up he was in an accident 2 miles from our home base,
To put this in perspective we have some hills that are steep and until you get almost to the crest to go down you can't see over the hill to see the bottom,,
Ok, he turned onto this gravel road and it did have a sign up that said utility work, one of those triangle orange portable signs,, the sign was on a flat section of the road,,
I digress and will mention that there's a company installing fiber optic lines in the road bed,, knifing in Orange tubing,,
Well known company that you see quite common in Nebraska,
Ok, back to what happened, he was 2 miles from home on this road that is flat until it isn't,,
He wasn't in a hurry because I told him he had plenty of time to get there before we would,, he was driving approximately 45 mph when he was at the crest of a steep drop in a hill,, as he came up to this drop in the hill he saw the road was totally blocked, the ditches on either side are 30' drop either side,,
This road (hill)was blocked by this company with their Vermeer tracked knife machine and a super duty with a big trailer,, he had milliseconds to decide what to do,, his first thought was to lay on the horn because the workers were on the side he was approaching them from and he didn't want to kill one of them if he hit them,, he had absolutely no room on either edge to get past them,, he was traveling south,, he chose the left side of the road that the trailer was on which the trailer rear faced him, he clipped or maybe ramped his pickup with the right front tire
( Ramps were on the ground to load Vermeer)
He ended upside down on the roof of his pickup after it rolled,, nose was facing down the embankment about 20'+feet down,,( this is his company pickup, new 2025 f150 with only 6k miles, received it the end of August,,)
He always wears his seat belt and was strapped in,, all the airbags went off except the wheel and dash,, side curtains and side seat bags deployed,,
He wasn't seriously hurt but they took him in the ambulance to the hospital to get an MRI and a physical check,, he is still sore yet and has some limited back and neck pain and stiffness,,
Ok,, now,,
The company workers didn't have signs or cones or a traffic person on the crest of the hill from either direction,, he had no clue they would have the road completely impassable as he crested the drop in this steep hill,,( they were part way up the hill from the bottom closest to him,)
Ok, my question is what do we expect from this company in any way?
Later about 6 pm as we waited for the tow company who brought a rotator out to pick it from the road bank, we came to meet them and a supervisor from said company was waiting there,,( he wasn't at the job location until after the accident)
This super admitted fault after talking to the work crew,, work crew admitted fault to deputy sheriff,,
Again, anyone with experience have direction of what to expect?
We know this is early on in this situation and it's still a work in progress,,
I am just so grateful that my son wasn't hurt or killed in this accident and it could have been so so much worse than it turned out to be,,
The pickup has damage everywhere, the hood took the brunt of the damage because it ended up resting on the hood and the rear of the box or tailgate top,, the roof isn't crumpled down because the hood and tailgate supported all the weight due to how it landed,,
It took the tow company 2 hours to pick it, set it on the roof on the road then rehook and flip it while up in the air to minimize anymore damage,, then the loaded it on a roll back and took it to their yard,,
Edit, if you look at the pic with the Vermeer in it you can see the tracks my son made that go to the left, you can see the tracks the Vermeer made after they moved it behind the trailer,,
Just curious is your son's company pickup for personal use too? I do something very similar to him in that I work from a home office until I visit customers. My car is for personal use too with very little restrictions. |
