North Central Kansas | The entire livestock sector benefits from crop subsidies. Those subsidies ensure a consistent supply of grain. Not necessarily a cheap supply but a consistent supply. Without that key element the beef, pork, and poultry sectors would be in trouble.
On the issue of herd size my question is how do those cattle coming out of the small herds grade coming out of the feedlot? My brother and I have been trying to improve our cowherd and bull selection. We were able to get our carcass data back from our calves we sold in January. That information was very helpful in seeing what we need to do to change to have a more consistent calf crop. Some would say why should I care how my cattle finish. From what we see those cattle that did not finish well are costing us as well. Those bulls and cows are weaning a smaller calf. That costs us money.
