Wisconsin | The framing of a house is a small fraction of the total cost. That's about all you end up saving in many cases, and that's not worth the extra effort of dealing with everything being out of square, too small, etc. On the other hand, build a new house and you'll pay for it twice, once up front, and again in increased taxes. ARPlowboy is updating a 40s or 50's ranch, that's a whole lot different from a 20's house, especially one with any serious damage or lacking any distinction more than the quality of the timber.
Seems like an Iowa member, 82something?, is restoring a distinctive old stone farmhouse. There are houses that are worth it to some, but I'd try real hard not to get into the path of rebuilding one that's not worth it. Seen way too many times where one thing leads to another and in the end none of it is worth the effort. | |
