NEMO
Not overly sure of the point you're trying to make, but I agree with at least part of what you're saying. I think in MO, the average herd size is like 18. These are mostly run on off acres that won't raise crops, so it's at least a return on ground that won't return anything, although now I think you could lease it out for deer hunting for about whatever price you want. I'm not sure your "hobby" analogy is correct either. My 150+ cows would be what the real cow guys in the Sandhills or Flint Hills would call a hobby. I've been saying for years on here that the cow herd is going to drop in numbers and it is/has now, and I don't see it coming back. Too much expense in new fence, watering systems, machinery, and young guys want off when they don't farm Go to the local county fair and watch a cattle show. About a third the number of farm kids as opposed to 30 years ago. Sure, there are still kids showing steers to try to make the sale....but what a bunch of hocus pocus in the name of animal husbandry. In the end I'm not sure that cows are going to town even faster as guys cash in and won't be back. Do I love cows, sure, but it gets a little harder all the time
