Pittsburg, Kansas | Wife and I have been using collagen supplements, mostly in our morning coffee, for a few years now.
Is it beneficial? Danged if I know. I would guess probably not. The reason being we eat a fair amount of collagen rich foods. The ribs we had yesterday had a lot of collagen.
So why do we continue to use it? Multiple reasons.
1. We can afford it. 40 years ago we likely would have worried about wasting some groceries money.
2. It might do some good. My guess is 95% chance no good, 5% it is supplying something doing us some good because of something we aren't getting enough of in our diet.
3. We like it. It is tasteless but adds some body to our coffee kind of like but different than cream or a cream substitute.
4. Our bodies don't work as good as they used to. Studies have shown that as we age things like protein are not digested as well as when younger but also do not utilize the protein nearly as effective as a young person does. An older person needs higher level of protein than a younger person for that reason to maintain muscle. Is collagen similar? I don't know but I would suspect it.
5. First do no harm. I don't think it will hurt anything but my pocketbook. I'm not worried about it harming me. I just consider it food.
6. Do I expect dramatic results? Absolutely not. If there's any improvement I expect it to be very minor or minimal.
With all that blather said, I ran across this video that I think covers the pros and cons very well. A balanced view among those promoting or denigrating it's use.

As often, some of the comments below the video are interesting.
