I've put fescue and reed canary grass with wheat as late as the very end of October and had satisfactory stands. When the wheat was really good it has been too competitive though. This was wheat taken for grain.
I tried it once with orchard grass and ended up with a mediocre stand. Not sure if that was the fault of the species or the weather that winter.
