NW Iowa | This is about like what you describe. I did a 13 acre seeding done about sept. 1 this fall that has thin spots due to what I think is lack of rain. The stand varies from 5% to 80%. But it’s kind of a mystery yet. This 13 acres was seeded @ 25lbs/acre and rolled with a Brillion culti packer with the teeth up, only the rollers was used. The soil was very level and dry and fairly loose. This is a parking lot for our threshing show. Over on the show grounds I seeded about the same amount of acres but that seed was incorporated with a drag harrow because a bearing went out in the cultipacker. A few days after seeding we had a quick hard 1 1/2” of rain. A week later we had a soft half inch of rain. The seed that was drug in has come up real nice with near perfect germination. The seed that was worked in with the cultipacker is showing the thin stand. The old experienced farmers around here claim the cultipacker is the cat’s meow for working in seed. This time the results are less than favorable.

So maybe I should wait till early spring to spike in more seed? | |
