  | Grain- I'm kinda with you. 75-100 after all but the rounding error stuff. Depreciation on the semi trailer tires etc... I do find it interesting to run a break even operation and then get a home run once every 7-10 years when Iowa gets a drought or something. It's not for me but I guess I get it. Grain farming is not that great of a business (I'm sure that will irritate plenty on this site). It probably feels like it to the guy that has 1000 paid for inherited acres that hires two seasonal truck drivers every fall but in general it's just not a great business. It's capital intensive and commodity based. Those are basically lousy. The returns on assets and return on equity are always low. It's a lifestyle though. If someone were to ask me I would probably encourage them to find reliable well paying income off farm/non ag related to feed their farming lifestyle. The bigger operations actually look way less fun than some of the small timers. To me anyway:) And by the way thanks for your contribution on this site. You always have productive comments that add something. Guys like you are why I come back! | |
