I buy my own components and build my own for PC's. 

For Macs, I buy used/refurb machines with lots of core. 

For other machines (Unix workstations, PDP-11's, etc), it's what I can find at the right price. 



lol @ PDP-11. I too have a retro computing habit, but not of that flavor.

I generally buy components and build my own desktop PCs and servers for home use... but it's honestly been a while since I've done that, because laptops have been my "main computer" for more than a decade now, and Apple does that better than anyone else (in my opinion; don't shoot me).

As far as buying a hand-built computer... the local businesses that used to sell those have all gone out of business now. There's nobody left in the area for me to recommend people go to (and I generally don't have the time/energy to build computers for others).
