Southwest Iowa | I’ve got 150 acres of corn in 2 fields that are separated by RR tracks. The south field is around 62 acres and the north one just short of 90. All of our corn acres got sprayed with fungicide and we used the same company for all of it. For these 2 fields, I discussed with the salesman and the operator that I was wanting to try some micronutrients package on some acres, so the plan was to split both fields in half and spray the east half with just fungicide and the west half with fungicide plus the micros.
4-6 weeks after application, I had the salesman come to the farm to show/share with him the streaking that everyone noticed this year. We gave drones a try this year for application so the streaking was more evident compared to a coptor or plane this year because of all the southern rust. He brought along a drone with I believe a NDVI filter on the camera so we could see the difference in healthy and non healthy plants.
When we got to the acres I mentioned above, we could see right to the line where the 2 different applications got applied. The east half still had bright colors showing “healthy” tissue. The west half of the fields were different shades of black and grey. He came to the conclusion that the operators added the micros like they were suppose to, but failed to add the fungicide.
In my mind, since they knew we were doing all our acres, I think I should get compensated for lost yield on those 80 acres. I’m hoping I can somehow harvest the east and west area’s separately in our hills and terraces to see how much of a yield hit there is.
The salesman and company are aware of the issue, and I haven’t made it known to them yet what I’m thinking. I’ll give them a call a few days prior to harvesting these fields and see what they say. They’ve been great to work with and I don’t have anything negative to say about them. Mistakes happen but I think there was enough communication between myself and them that it should have been preventable.
I’m also not looking to get rich off this. I just feel like I should be compensated fairly for what I was planning on getting in return, i.e. all my corn acres applied with fungicide.
Thanks for any insight or thoughts you’ve got on this. | |
