We did it most years between 2003 and 2016. Hardest part is getting a stand, they like heat once they are up a growing, but do not emerge the greatest when it is hot. Jul 1 to July 25 is when we would plant. Weed control can be hard too, spray zidua and sparton, there is no post emerge options for pigweeds. Blackbirds can take a field in 2 days if a big flock shows up. Every other animal will eat them too once they have seed. Deer will eat the top out when they are small and destroy any chance that plant produces anything. With good subsoil moisture you can grow a crop of flowers without rain. Yields of 700 to 1200 were common, 1600 was the best we ever did. Last time we planted them was 2023, very little subsoil moisture, followed by a dry august and sept. yield was 700 to 900, nieghbor did not harvest his double crop soybeans. Would have been a money maker if the price of flowers followed soybeans like it did in past years. Used to be that the price of flowers per hundred weight was double that of soybean price per bushel, that year they were the same. Harvest with a header with pans, neighbor is selling his 30 ft case head with pans. Don't want real short plants when harvesting with pans.
