coast of Maine | We do some acreages organic but majority not possible with veg /fruit here with the weather issues.About 10 years ago we did some larger blocks.Well guess what..the big growers out west California/Arizona and their farms they run in old Mexico have the shelf space and the contracts and the market is basically owned by corporate. There is very little if any premium from the chain store buyers. With Mexican labor at 1$ per hour south of the border the big guys have it beat.So that leaves local sales.Unless you are farming near a city that has an organic consuming populace you will sell for the same as conventional. If you covered with say Harnois hoop houses and grew premium early or late produce then the income level may be good locally. But one big wind storm or snow and those tunnels go down.Im glad to see you thinking. One note is now it is heavy corn chem clean, you can start your business of reg fruit an veg growing. No need to keep it organic just local will do. | |
