NEMO | We have been planting BURRUS corn since the 1960's when my Grandpa started with them. My son decided to do a Test Plot as part of his FFA SAE to compare Burrus with Pioneer and LG Seeds.
This plot was set up to try and compare the different brands with similar maturities grouped together in the plot. He used BURRUS 4W42 (108 day) as a check hybrid throughout the plot.
BURRUS 4W42 done really well last year all over Burrus regional territory so felt like we should try it on some acres. We haven't planted 108 day corn in years as that is on the low end of our maturity range. We usually stick to 111 - 116 day maturity corn. After seeing 4W42 this year it will probably have up to 1/4 of my acres next year. The consistent yield across the plot and yielding 4 bushel more than the plot average as a check should warrant looking at 4W42. It was an attractive corn and looked good.
BURRUS 8A12 has been a favorite for a few years now. 116 day Full Flex hybrid is exactly what I want for a lot of my acres. Apparently it hasn't lost its touch, winning the plot. It will have 1/4 of my acres again next year.
LG 63C32 came in 3rd in the plot but won amongst the 112-113 day hybrids. It looked good all year and if it had won the plot I wouldn't of been surprised. But I was surprised the other LG numbers kind of fell off. They looked good on the field edge exposed to the road all year.
Pioneer 13841 came in 5th in the plot but was 2nd amongst the 112-113 day hybrids. Riding with my son while shelling the plot I remember this number being really consistent on the yield monitor from one end to the other. Had a friend tell me this number went 207 on some tuff hills in a county over that received a lot of rain. So it was having a good year.
Would like to thank the local LG Seed rep Brad for his seed donations as well as Nelson's for the Pioneer seed. As to the BURRUS seed we pulled bags straight off the pallets of seed in the shed that we had for planting. So none of the Burrus seed was plot seed or had anything special done to it as no one had any idea he was going to do a seed corn test plot. (not saying anything was done special to any of the seed, but some bags were labeled Plot Seed and I know some people question that)
Other notes off the top of my head:
No-till corn plot planted at 27500.
Roundup/Callisto burn down.
Post with Atrazine, Roundup, Callisto, Dual
Generic fungicide/insecticide by ground sprayer around brown silk.
